About The Book: This book provides an account of British administration during the 1857 revolt in India. The native army, previously supportive of British rule, rebelled against their leaders. The "King of Delhi" became a symbolic figure, while regional rulers observed with concern. Communication between Calcutta, Delhi, and Punjab was severed, and the besieging force struggled to hold their position. British representatives in Upper India faced tremendous challenges in maintaining law and order, often assuming military responsibilities. Despite difficulties, many defended their districts with the help of civilian officials and improvised military units. About The Author: Henry George Keene CIE (1826–1915) was an English historian specializing in the study of medieval and modern India. Keene received his education at Rugby School and Wadham College, Oxford, before embarking on a career with the East India Company in 1847. Although his official career was not extensive, Keene began writing during this time. He served in the Bengal Civil Service from 1847 to 1882, with his notable role as Superintendent at Dehra Doon during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. and he retired as a district and sessions Judge upon reaching the 35-year limit. He was honored with the decoration of CIE and had established himself as a respected literary figure.
