He served in the Bengal Civil Service from 1847 to 1882, with his notable role as Superintendent at Dehra Doon during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. and he retired as a district and sessions Judge upon reaching the 35-year limit. He was honored with the decoration of CIE and had established himself as a respected literary figure.
